In any job interview you are part of you will always be asked a series of questions based on a broad range of areas. It is best to always be prepared and to think ahead in terms of what questions you will be asked. 

When it comes to interviewing candidates HR professionals will use a range of questions that are designed to asses a candidates suitability for a particular position. Competency based questions are always asked & there are 6 main competencies that are assessed:

1. Communication Skills
2. Technical Competencies
3. Management Skills
4. Leadership Skills
5. Problem Solving/Decision Making Skills
6. Personal Attributes

Communication Skills
Communication skills refer to your ability to interact and engage with other people. It may also include questions pertaining to your ability to negotiate, present or persuade. Your interpersonal skills will also fall under this category
 
Example: 
  • What do you believe are your key strengths?
  • Are you a team player?

Technical Competencies
Technical Competency questions are quite straightforward and are concerned with programs & systems that you are competent with. This includes computer programs as well as your typing speed per minute.

Example:
  • What computer softwares are you familiar with and confident in using?
  • How many words per minute can you type?

Management Skills
Management skills refer to your skills in organising and planning, delegating responsibility to others, managing staff morale and maximising productivity. 

Example:
  • How would you rate your management skills out of 10?
  • Describe the work environment and its management style of a previous business that you have worked for?
  • What is your management style?

Leadership Skills
Leadership skills refer to your ability to lead, motivate, mentor and coach a team of people in the workplace. Your ability to work in a team will also be assessable. 

Example:
  • Would you consider yourself a team player & why?
  • Can you give me an example of a project that you completed with a team and how you worked together to complete the task?
  • Would you consider yourself a better worker in a team environment or independently?

Problem Solving/Decision Making Skills
Problem Solving & decision making skills is based on your ability to solve problems and make decisions in a wide range of situations. The employer wants to know whether you have the skills and competence to do so and it is important to be convincing and confident in your answer.

Example:
  • Can you give an example of a challenging decision you had to make at your previous job?
  • How do you go about making important decisions?
  • How would you handle a disgruntled customer?

Personal Attributes
Personal attributes are based on the skills and competencies you posses that you can contribute to the business. Factors such as initiative, reaction under stress and personal integrity are assessed in this sector.

Example:
  • What do you know about our business?
  • What do you find attractive about this position?
  • What can you contribute to our business that other applicants cant?
