How to get GIS jobsHow to get GIS jobs

There are plenty of jobs in the GIS industry, but the problem comes with trying to crack one. "How do I get GIS jobs?" This is a question EBR staff are asked frequently by candidates from the graduate to the senior level.

Here are three basic tips to help you follow the GIS career path:

  • Get a University degree, majoring in Cartography or even Geography
  • Subscribe to and join online GIS organisations, newsletters and communities. This will improve your social networking skills, and provide you with great access to latest news, events and sometimes even job vacancies!
  • Research! You will need to research the types of jobs that are available in the GIS industry. As a graduate, you can even do this by asking university lecturers how they got into the field.
There a many jobs available in other fields which will require GIS skills and experience. You may be able to find positions in engineering or environmental, as you will often find that these industries hire GIS specialists.

Please remember that social networking is important, so you should look into joining online communities and attending industry events. Brush up on your social skills, as you could meet your future boss at one of these events!
